How to do a professional retrospective?

Par: Martine Marois

“I was afraid of losing everything: my business, my colleagues, my confidence and my finances, because let’s face it, charging $400 in April 2020 doesn’t pay the bills! I took a step back and was able to pick myself up and achieve expansion in 2021.”

Jessie Fortin, founding president of Défis RH

Doing a retrospective allows you to honor what has been, to learn from your experiences, to let go of what no longer suits you, to improve on what worked well, but also to clarify what you want to experience, accomplish and succeed in the next year.

The year 2021 is drawing to a close, so why not take a moment to take stock of your own career?

To help you, here are 5 questions you can reflect on. You can then write your thoughts on paper, which will allow you to make your 2021 professional retrospective.

1. Which sentence best describes your year?

“Human first!”

Défis RH

By targeting a phrase or keyword to describe your year, it will allow you to mark the completed year in your memory and, why not, compare it later to those to come.

2. What are some things you are thankful for in 2021?

“Ironically, I thank the pandemic for giving me time to step back and reset our corporate values and culture.”

Jessie Fortin, founding president of Défis RH

There is nothing like gratitude to make you see things differently. Sometimes we tend to see the bad side, but if you look closely, you’ll see the experiences that have allowed you to evolve, transform and reinvent yourself, as well as develop your confidence.

3. In the past year, what have you accomplished, learned or achieved that is new?

“We have expanded our team with the addition of one person in recruitment and another in marketing. In addition, we have been responsive to your needs by creating our first Virtual Job Fair, a first in the recruitment agency industry.”

Appreciating some of your accomplishments gives you the impetus to go further. Here, the exercise should give you a real sense of pride. A pat on the back every once in a while feels good!

4. What have been your most important or defining moments in your professional relationships?

“Investing in our company culture with our morning meetings, our one on ones, our participation to the Défi Everest, our trip to the south and our Christmas party.”

Défis RH

This question allows you to highlight the relationships that are beneficial to your success. Investing in a good corporate culture and connections has a direct impact on your professional development and performance.

5. Who do you want to say thank you to today?

“This year has been extraordinary, but nothing would have been possible without your collaboration. That’s why we wanted to say THANK YOU!”

Défis RH

With a little hindsight, you will realize that, in the past year, people have helped you, supported you, listened to you, encouraged you. This is the time to say a sincere thank you and to show your appreciation.

Things don’t change, we change.

“We are already looking forward to a new chapter in our history. We will be ready to help you, always putting people first. See you in 2022, ready to overcome new challenges!”

Défis RH

By writing your professional retrospective, you will not only improve your well-being, but also that of the company’s collective happiness. And finally, why not accompany this review with a vision board? This will allow you to project what you want for the new year.

On that note, we wish you a good reflection! Do not hesitate to contact us, we will be happy to help you.
