How to feel less depressed during the month of November?

Par: Emmy Ouellet

The grey and cold weather of November is known to be the cause of seasonal depression and an increased loss of motivation. In fact, more than 25% of Quebecers are affected by this disorder. (Le Journal de Québec) The cycle is the same every year: the natural light decreases and the cold sets in, which makes us lose our good habits and we are more tempted to stay inside, watch Netflix and eat sweets while waiting for this period to end.

It’s obvious that this time of year can affect your productivity and motivation at work. So we present you some methods to help you get through this unloved month and make it better!

The hygge

What is it?

Hygge is a Danish lifestyle that appeared in the early 1800’s. It evokes the Danish ideal of comfort, conviviality, simplicity and well-being. This philosophy of life is more easily lived than explained. In short, hygge is synonymous with living good moments and enjoying them in the moment. This method must work well since Denmark is in second place in the ranking of the happiest countries! (Geo)

How to embody it?

Here, in a few points, is how you can practice hygge in your daily life to lift your spirits and feel better, both at work and in your personal life.

– Enjoy the moment;

– Take a break from the routine;

– Take some time for yourself;

– Live each day to the fullest;

– Do activities and hobbies that you are passionate about;

– Give real importance to the little things;

– Focus on a warm, calm and serene atmosphere and ambiance (by sitting by a fireplace or lighting candles, for example);

– Pamper yourself;

Be instead of appearing, counting, doing and having.

Other tricks in a hurry

Force yourself to see the daylight

As the sun is already much less present, take advantage of these few hours to recharge your batteries outside. There’s nothing better than a little vitamin D and a few breaths of fresh air!

Counter anxiety with physical activity and nutrition

Working out is always a good way to feel better. You don’t have to become a gym pro! Fifteen minutes a day of exercise is enough to make you feel better. Go according to your desires! A healthy nutrition is also a good way to get back on your feet and regain your energy.

Break your routine

To break the gloom, don’t be afraid to shake things up a bit and change your established routine. Find a new hobby, take a class that interests you, go out and discover new places… The choice is yours! This change will put you back on your feet and will certainly help you break out of your habits.

Try light therapy

Light therapy could do you a world of good! All you need to do is get a light therapy lamp and turn it on in front of you for 20 to 30 minutes a day. You will see a difference in the weeks that follow and you won’t be able to do without it!
